Rinker’s Golf Tips August 3rd Top 100 Teacher James Leitz. James Leitz is the only top 100 teacher and top 100 club fitter in America. He is also a Trackman and 3D expert. James recently purchased the new Gears Optical wireless 3D system which has eight cameras in the ceiling that capture data. There are markers on the golf club itself and it can measure shaft bending and twisting, along with the closure rate of the club face to the path of the club head. James said that impact point on the club face is a close second to club face angle with a driver, and we may never get to the true end, and be able to measure gear effect at impact. With an efficiency of impact, the ball goes faster.
James talked about how an instructor needs to understand the golf swing infinitely, while being able to teach the student with utmost simplicity. He doesn’t try to get everybody to hit up with a driver and maximize distance because not everybody can do it in an efficient way. Hitting up more can affect path, club face, and impact point. James would rather change ball position at address than change someone’s swing to get a better attack angle. Tour players have more spin simply because they create more speed in the club head. Repeat-ability is huge and people have to do what they do best.
Too many people are trying to move the ball both ways and most people have enough club head speed to play the golf of their dreams. James calls it “Golfer’s Hell” when people’s geometry doesn’t match what they want the ball to do. The swing is feel based and at the end of the day, golfers have to feel the proper swing in order to be able to repeat it. “Can’t teach without fitting and can’t fit without teaching. A golf lesson is 50 minutes of intense teaching with 10 minutes of furious fitting. Most every golf club works for somebody,” James said. Just have to get the right fit with your lie and length. Lastly another nugget from James, “Somebody can run a four minute mile in your shoes, it’s just not you.” James Leitz can be reached at www.Leitzgolf.com
